Montserrat

November 14, 2009

In the late 80′s and early 90′s I used to travel to nearby Montserrat for weekend jaunts. I also represented a villa company marketing over 30 villas. Up until ’95 business was steady. Then, all hell broke loose the summer of ’95. Soufriere, a dormant volcano came to life and changed the entire landscape and culture of this island. I have not been back since but stay connected through the Montserrat Volcano Observatory and other links.  You can travel for a day trip from Antigua on a helicopter or take WINAIR for the day. Overnights and week stays are for sure an option. There is an exclusion zone, safe from harms way.

Here is a FABULOUS photo shoot from a heli pilot. Enjoy

Ecotours in Antigua

August 17, 2009

Imagine a day kayaking through the mangroves teeming with fish. The silence of the quiet water passages lead to a private beach where you may snorkel and enjoy a lovely picnic. Meander through the lovely gardens and take in the tranquil setting. This is South Coast Horizons located on the south coast of Antigua below Johnson’s Point. Mr. Bradley Lewis has created the ultimate eco tour for those seeking a unique experience. Located around Cades Bay, the views include majestic Boggy Peak and in the distance from the sea, the islands of Montserrat and Redonda. If you prefer a lovely walk, the 300-foot boardwalk leads through the mangroves ending at the beach. If you wish you may stay awhile enjoying one of the many casual comfortable accommodations. Within a short drive are several dining spots and the rain forest. It’s the perfect day or holiday stay for couples, groups, or families. Bradley has accommodations, pool, catering and of course his mangroves.  Mary Richardson from Boston’s Chronicle Show just visited and loved her day at South Coast Horizons. Contact 1-800-219-0118 or email ann@antiguacaribbean.com to organize a tour.

Test Match Cricket Abandoned Today

February 13, 2009

Test Cricket with England against the Windies was postponed today at the nearly new Sir Vivian Richard Stadium. The reason was poor ground conditions for the players. Reports stated the sand based outfield was not safe so games today were abandoned. There is talk of moving the games to the old Antigua Recreation Ground. I wonder how the grounds are since no play has been seen in over 3 years.  A better option might be the private grounds owned by Sir Allen Stanford over at the 20 / 20 field.  There is even talk in the news about moving the venue off island and doing back to backs in Barbados. It’s really a pity as so many have paid dearly to travel and see the test matches in Antigua.  The blame is being passed around but who cares who’s at fault. The fans and players are deeply disappointed. Let’s hope for the best.

Here is a photo of a match at the Antigua Recreation Grounds a few years back courtesy of Eli Fuller.

Best Beach On Antigua…

February 4, 2009

Everyone has their favorite beach. With a choice of 365 options it’s a pleasure discovering your private little escape. For years I had heard whispers about a secret little bay accessible by foot, sturdy 4 wheel drive or boat. My friend Stuart Griffith who owns Choke on a Bone took me one sunny day south to see Rendezvous. Due to rough seas I was too nervous to get off the boat but looked at what was one of the loveliest most unspoiled beaches on Antigua. Someday I will return.

My colleague Eli Fuller, born and bred in Wadadli (Antigua) operates Adventure Antigua ( www.adventureantigua.com). He can wisk you away to this escape. Take a look at one of Antigua’s 365 beaches. What is your vote for Antigua’s best beach?

Kite Mania

January 27, 2009

Kite AntiguaNext time you are coming back from the airport headed towards Dickenson Bay, take a look at the first beach you come. It just happens to be kite heaven. Located on the north side of Antigua at Jabberwock, Kite Antigua is the place to catch the wind. It’s a perfect place to learn how to kite, or to take your riding to the next level. The man to see is Adam Anton and his team of kite kooks.  These hot shot riders are quite talented, one Andre Phillips being a professional kiter. He no longer competes but he is at every event and travels the world for his passion, kiting. The warm trade winds blow during the months of December through May, and also during the summer months of July and August. The wind direction is usually side-on which is great for all skill levels with mostly bump and jump conditions, perfect for launching airs. They have a few flat areas for tricks where they have a 60 foot A- frame slider and a kicker, and when the wind is from the north (more on-shore) the shore break can be really fun for bashing lips as well. I have flown a kite but prefer to stick to my Stand Up Paddle Board of a nice 4.7 windsurf sail.  For me the pure enjoyment is watching the boyz fly thru the air.  Cheers

Barbuda and the Search For a Secluded Beach

November 25, 2008

One of the last Caribbean outposts is Barbuda. The sister island to Antigua, Barbuda is famous for pink sandy beaches, a bird sanctuary, and an unspoiled landscape. Just 27 miles North of Antigua the island is about 14 miles long by 8 miles wide. The highest point is only about 125 feet and with a population of 1,417 (2001) this island is very special.  We flew a local carrier to the island on several visits but there is one ferry and private charters.  I love exploring the island in a jeep and spending time on the beach. There are other activities. Visit the frigate bird sanctuary, photograph wild boar, and fallow deer. Beach comb on a stretch of uninhabited pink sandy beach. Go fishing or diving or simply soak up the sun.  Guest houses are predominantly the accommodation-of-choice for visiting travelers, but two new high-end properties are also available.

I recommend Barbuda for a day visit for those who seek to experience the island’s charm.  Writers, escapists and nature lovers will enjoy a week’s stay.

Choke On a Bone

November 20, 2008

If you dream of being whisked away to a secluded cove for a swim and snorkel, but Barbuda is a bit too far for the day, look no more. Stuart Griffith is the captain and owner of Choke on a Bone, a 27-foot motor catamaran. Capt. Stuart has over 20 years experience sailing the waters of Antigua. He knows all the secret coves and beaches to insure your day on the water is nothing short of wonderful. I first met Stuart in the late 80′s when he worked on the Falcon. He taught me how to snorkel off Bird Island.  Stuart is the consummate sea expert providing a safe and comfortable day at sea on his immaculate boat. Whether you wish to go fishing or cruising, Choke on a Bone is the perfect choice. Choke on a Bone is conveniently docked in Jolly Harbour Marina, but he can also pick up clients at select hotels. This excursion is perfect for a romantic picnic or a family or group day on the water. My favorite day trip was a boat ride down to Rendezvous Bay and a stop to snorkel at Cades Reef.
