Official Press Release:

The following statement was issued by the police:

On 30 January, 2009, a 21 year resident of Potters, Sylvester Lindsey, was arrested and charged for the murder of Drew Joseph Gollan of Australia which occurred in English Harbour on the 22nd January, 2009. The individual will be brought before the Court on Monday for the homicide. A .32 calibre pistol has been seized which we believe was involved in the offence.

Three other persons were detained in relation to the murder. Investigation is continuing and we will further advise if more charges are to be laid.

The success of the investigation was due to a team effort between the police and public. The Homicide and Intelligence Units of the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda with the assistance of Crime Stoppers, the media and the general public pulled together to help solve the case. Numerous tips were received and members of the public have come forward to assist the police.

Shock waves were sent around Antigua and the Caribbean when we learned of the tragic death of Capt. Drew Gollan Thur. evening.  Drew was the captain of the 50 meter Perseus, a luxury yacht docked in Antigua.  He was walking home from dinner in English Harbour with his partner and their child when they were approached in an attempted robbery. There was some incident involving the gun being dropped, discharging and then a chase. Drew was killed during this robbery. The  entire island is in shock after this senseless attack.  Island officials and locals  met at Abracadabra Restaurant to discuss the crime and to discuss security matters. To honor and respect Drew, local restaurants cancelled music and entertainment for the evening and closed after dinner.  I have spent many days and nights in Dockyard and am shocked to hear of this horrific crime. I did not know Drew but was deeply saddened when I learned about this tragedy. I googled Drew and saw his Facebook. I saw a bio where I learned he studied whales and was very connected to the sea. I saw a website post he left at an eco lodge in Saba. He respected the sea and the environment. Many who lived on island told me what a wonderful man he was. Crime exists all over the world but it still makes no sense.  There is a community meeting in English Harbour Monday AM as a follow up to the Friday Meeting. Details to follow.

RIP Drew Gollan
